asterisk is the optimal point which cannot be achieved, because it is the perfect ideal. if you are putting in "a" amount of effort, you get "A" amount of stress, which translates into a certain level of performance level, P-knot. if you are putting in "b" amount of effort, you get "B" amount of stress, which translates to the same performance level, p-knot. since asterisk is non attainable (assumed), we should always perform below peak to get the maximum per-effort performance, at point "A", instead of "B". in other words, choose the lower level of effort that yield the same amount of result, before peak is attained. its economically correct.
